the Geec
The Galway Energy Efficient Car is a student-led project from the University of Galway that designs, builds, and races Ireland’s most energy-efficient car.
What We Do
The Geec combines innovation, teamwork, and sustainable engineering to advance electric vehicle efficiency.
⚡Energy Efficiency
Pushing the limits of what’s possible with sustainable vehicle technology.
👥 Student-Led
Built entirely by passionate engineering students at the University of Galway, supported by fantastic lecturers.
🏆Competition Ready
Designed and built to compete in Shell Eco-marathon every year.
🛠️ Hands-On Learning
Real-world engineering experience that prepares students for their careers.
Built by Students, Driven by Innovation
The Geec is a student-led project at the University of Galway focused on designing and building an energy-efficient vehicle for international competition.
Our multidisciplinary team brings together students from mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to tackle real-world challenges in sustainable transportation.

Our Achievements
Students from across multiple engineering disciplines come together each year to find new ways of improving the Geec’s performance and their efforts continue to pay off.
Back in 2018, the Geec won Shell Eco-marathon’s (SEM) Innovation Award for our unique approach to wheel cover openings, which reduced aerodynamic drag. In 2024, we achieved our best ever track performance, reaching 346.2 km/kWh. To put this into context, the Geec can travel over 346.2 km on the same amount of energy it takes to power a 1kW appliance for just one hour.
Most recently, in 2025, the Geec was awarded best Virtual Garage, the very first year it was introduced!
